Discover Cape Winelands
The Cape Winelands district is an area of spectacular scenery, as well as being renowned for its world class wineries and restaurants, historic towns and Dutch homesteads. Set against the scenic backdrop of mountains, the area is also popular for outdoor activities, including hiking and mountain biking.
The area of Franschhoek, with its quaint village, beautiful landscape, vineyards and a wonderful choice of restaurants, is also a definite must-visit destination on any trip to the Western Cape. Franschhoek was first colonised by the French Huguenots in 1692, and French culture and architecture is still very visible, including annual festivals, ranging from the Bastille Festival, to wine, champagne and cheese festivals. Other stops on the Wine Route include Stellenbosch, an area offering magnificent views, a beautiful landscape, historic manor houses, and some of the finest wines in South Africa. The famous Wine Routes also include Constantia, Helderberg and Durbanville.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Cape Winelands portfolio includes restored Cape Dutch homesteads on working wine estates in the Stellenbosch valleys like Villa Monticello, elegant estates like Oakvale with mountain views outside Franschhoek. Franschhoek House is within the prestigious 30-acre La Residence estate in the heart of South Africa’s Franschhoek Valley.
The Winelands demand their own transport – the mountain passes and valley roads connecting Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl are as rewarding to drive as the estates they lead to. A private driver is essential for wine tasting days and evening dining. We work with a small number of trusted, discreet drivers and can arrange dedicated transport for the duration of your stay.
Stellenbosch is under forty minutes from Cape Town, Franschhoek just over an hour via the scenic Helshoogte Pass, and Paarl under an hour via the N1. A pre-arranged private transfer is the most seamless arrival – let us organise this ahead of your trip.
Stellenbosch’s oak-lined streets and exceptional concentration of estates make it the natural hub of any Winelands stay. Franschhoek, contained within a single breathtaking valley, has the finest restaurant scene in the region and a quietly sophisticated character entirely its own. Paarl, larger and less visited, rewards exploration of its Cape Dutch main street and the wild granite peaks of Paarl Rock above the town.
Cape Town is under an hour and rewards a dedicated day on the Atlantic Seaboard or the peninsula drive to the Cape of Good Hope. The Hemel-en-Aarde valley outside Hermanus, with its celebrated Pinot Noir and whale watching between July and November, is under two hours from Franschhoek. We can arrange private drivers and tailored itineraries for either.
Franschhoek’s main street is the finest concentration of serious restaurants in the Winelands – The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français remains the most celebrated address, with a tasting menu that draws on the full depth of South African produce. Stellenbosch’s farm restaurants in the Banghoek valley offer exceptional estate dining in beautiful Cape Dutch settings.
