Comporta village itself is the quiet heart of the region – a single street of whitewashed houses, a handful of excellent restaurants, and a rice paddy landscape that feels entirely removed from the Algarve tourist circuit. Carvalhal and Brejos da Carregueira to the south are quieter still, with long empty beaches and a wilder, more elemental Atlantic character. The Sado Estuary, home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, rewards an early morning boat excursion.

The beaches are Comporta’s defining feature – thirty kilometres of unbroken Atlantic coastline backed by umbrella pines, with no high-rise development and some of the finest surf in Portugal. The rice paddies stretching inland from the coast, particularly at golden hour, offer one of the most unexpectedly beautiful landscapes on the Iberian Peninsula.

Setúbal and the Serra da Arrábida, a protected limestone mountain range plunging into extraordinary turquoise water, is under an hour by road and among the most spectacular coastal scenery in Portugal. Lisbon is ninety minutes away and rewards a dedicated day. The hilltop town of Alcácer do Sal, with its Moorish castle reflected in the Sado River, is a rewarding and largely undiscovered half-day excursion.
