Naoussa in the north is the island’s most characterful village – a working fishing harbour ringed by whitewashed houses, excellent restaurants, and a relaxed evening scene that manages to feel genuinely unspoiled. Parikia, the capital, rewards a morning on foot through its Kastro quarter and around the celebrated Panagia Ekatontapiliani church. Lefkes, tucked into the marble hills at the island’s centre, is quieter still – a medieval village of bougainvillea-draped lanes and sweeping views across to Naxos that feels entirely removed from the coastal bustle.

Antiparos, directly across a narrow strait, is reachable by a short ferry and rewards a full day – its cave system is among the most impressive in the Aegean, and the main village has a slower, more intimate pace than its larger neighbour. Naxos is under an hour by ferry and offers mountain villages, excellent local produce, and a scale and variety that rewards an overnight stay. Naoussa is the most rewarding area for dining – the tavernas around the inner harbour serve some of the freshest fish in the Cyclades, and the tables spilling onto the waterfront on a warm evening are among the most pleasant in the Greek islands. The village’s back streets have also attracted a small number of more considered restaurants in recent years without losing the essential character of the place. 

Parikia’s market street offers reliable traditional taverna cooking and is best approached for a long, unhurried lunch. For a more special evening, Barbarossa on Naoussa’s harbour is the island’s most consistent fine dining address – confident, produce-led Greek cooking with a wine list that takes the country’s serious regional producers seriously.
