FranschoekFranschoek is a small beautiful and historical town in the Western Cape Province, and one of the oldest towns in South Africa. Le Lude is a wine farm situated in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, on the edge of Franschhoek Village. A family-owned boutique winery, La Lude offers both a wine cellar and also the Orangerie Restaurant, Open for lunch only, the menu offers French cuisine, with an Asian twist. There is also an excellent list of local wines, and there is also a daily afternoon tea menu.Babylonstoren Babel is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms, which dates back to 1692, Babylonstoren is situated in the Franschhoek wine valley and offers a great selection of food and wine experiences, ranging from its fruit and vegetable garden to its wonderful Babel Restaurant.
StellenboschThe oldest wine route in South Africa, scenic Stellenbosch in the Western Cape’s coastal region is one of the most popular destinations for both local and international visitors. The most famous wine producing region in South Africa, Stellenbosch has many award-winning wine estates, as well as some great restaurants.The following four restaurants are run by Bertus Basson whose restaurants have been awarded prestigious accolades from restaurant guides, including the Eat Out Guide and Rossouw’s Restaurant Guide. Since 2007, his establishments have grown into a family of restaurants that include Clara’s Barn, a beautiful restaurant situated in the oldest barn in the Western Cape at Vergenoegd Löw, a working wine farm. With a modern South African Farm kitchen, guests will enjoy creative 3 and 5 course menu. The other recommended restaurants are Geuwels, Eike and Chorus.
The Table at De Meye is situated on a wine producing estate, and has an indoor restaurant as well a beautiful lawned garden with outdoor dining tables under the shade of large trees. De Meye is in an idyllic location, and offers a 3-course sharing menu, using homegrown produce from its kitchen garden.Tucked away on the beautiful Delaire Graaf Estate is the 5-star Indochine restaurant, offering Asian-inspired cuisine, including delicious tapas presented in an art form, as well as signature dishes like pork belly and duck – offering an all-sensory dining experience.
Dusk Restaurant is another fine dining restaurant concept by chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin offering a 13 course tasting menu depending on local produce and the time of year. The dishes are also paired with both local wine favourites, as well as an international selection. The Cavalli Estate, set in 100 hectares, in the prestigious Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, is known for its architecture, gardens, and art. With 26 hectares of vineyards producing award-winning wine, the restaurant here offers excellent local sustainable cuisine.
Hout BayJust a 20 minute drive from Cape Town, the small coastal town of Hout Bay is known for its beautiful blue sea and mountains. Visitors here can enjoy activities like surfing, swimming, kayaking and various sporting activities, as well as the local restaurants, including the two below.Chapmans Peak Hotel Restaurant was established over 25 years ago and has a reputation for its famous calamari and seafood. The terrace here has a wonderful view of the beach and sunsets, ideal for dining during the summer. Visitors can choose wine from the wine cellar to accompany the delicious seafood dishes, steaks and salads.Chefs Warehouse at Tintswalo Atlanticis also set right by the sea, the restaurant here is in a boutique hotel at the foot of Chapman’s Peak Drive, and uses marine products sourced from a selection of small, sustainable local suppliers.
Hermanus and OverbergJust 1 ½ hours drive from the city of Cape Town, this area offers a beautiful landscape of rolling hills and beaches, as well as the resort town of Hermanus, which has earned a reputation as the best land-based whale-watching destination in Africa. There is plenty to enjoy inland as well, including nature reserves, lakes, birds and flowers. Hermanus is also known for its gourmet restaurants, fertile winelands, and impressive selection of boutique shops and galleries.The Restaurant at Newton Johnson is a part of The Newton Johnson Vineyards’ winery, nestled high in the mountainside, 9 kms from Hermanus and with wonderful views over the valley and the Atlantic Ocean below. The restaurant offers fine wines, and meals using local ingredients, mainly grown on the farm.
Spookfontein Restaurant is perched up in the hills of the Hemel en Aarde valley and has views to the mountains, fynbos-clad hills and vineyards. The creative Spookfontein Restaurant turns locally-sourced ingredients, into delicious meals, and there is also a wine cellar and tasting room.Mogg’s Country Cookhouse is located in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley outside Hermanus in the Western Cape province of South Africa and is a family run restaurant, surrounded by mountains, fields, fruits, and vines. It is truly a magnificent valley and well worth a visit when you come to Hermanus to enjoy the coastal scenery, watch the whales or taste the wines of the area.
