Dubrovnik has a remarkable history. An independent, merchant republic for 700 years (abolished by Napoleon in 1806), it traded with Turkey and India in the East (with a consul in Goa, India) and had trade representatives in Africa (in the Cape Verde Islands). It even had diplomatic relations with the English court in the Middle Ages (There is a letter from Elizabeth I on display in the City Museum in Dubrovnik.
The old town was completed in the 13th century and remains virtually unchanged to the present day. Tall ramparts surround it and there are only two entrances to the old town which lead to the Stradun, the city's main promenade. One of the greatest pleasures for many visitors is to have a drink in one of the nearby cafes and watch the world go by, whilst they themselves are being 'watched' by the city patron, St. Blaise, or Sveti Vlaho as the locals call him. In 1991/2, the Serbs shelled the city causing considerable damage, but thanks to local efforts and international aid, the old town has been restored to its former beauty.

The Old City is best explored on foot in the early morning before the cruise ships arrive – the Stradun, the Rector’s Palace, and the lanes climbing either side of the main street reward unhurried wandering. The Lapad peninsula offers a quieter, more residential character with good restaurants and a gentler pace. The village of Cavtat to the south, elegant and largely untouched by mass tourism, is one of the most charming coastal towns on the Adriatic.
The city walls, walkable in their entirety and offering extraordinary views across the terracotta rooftops and out to sea, are the essential Dubrovnik experience – best done at opening time to beat the crowds. The Franciscan Monastery and its remarkable medieval pharmacy, one of the oldest in Europe, and the cable car ascent to Mount Srđ above the city are both worth the time.
The Elaphite islands – Lopud, Šipan, and Koločep – are reachable by ferry and offer a car-free, unhurried contrast to the city. Lopud’s Šunj beach is among the finest on the coast. The Pelješac peninsula to the north produces exceptional Plavac Mali red wine and the oysters at Mali Ston are unmissable. We can arrange private boat charters and tailored itineraries for either.
The backstreet restaurants of the Old City consistently outperform the more prominent Stradun terraces – Proto and Nautika remain the most established addresses for fresh Adriatic seafood.
