Full Description
This luxury villa to rent near Dubrovnik in Croatia, is a unique and beautifully restored 15th century monastery, on the beautiful island of Lopud, at the heart of the Elaphiti islands, and just one hour by boat from Dubrovnik. Situated on the northern tip of the island, the monastery dates back to 1483 when it was a cloistered sanctuary for quiet contemplation and healing. Over the last 20 years, it has been beautifully restored, under the guidance of Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, retaining its authenticity, with the addition of modern comforts. Over four generations, the Thyssen-Bornemisza family have amassed an impressive art collection, and the selection of works in the Monastery includes original Renaissance and Gothic furniture, as well as decorative arts and paintings.
The beautiful main hall of the luxury property rental in Croatia features two 18th century Baroque angels, attributed to the Polish sculptor Michael Klahr, as well as original wall inscriptions and traces of engravings from times past. Together, these create a stunning indoor space, ideal for hosting welcome drinks and receptions. The 13 original monks’ cells have been tastefully converted into five beautiful bedroom suites, each with its own bathroom and views to the sea, or garden. The impressive Lower Garden, with a traditional pergola walk, is perfect for relaxing in the sun or under the shade of ancient olive trees, while enjoying views of the Adriatic Sea. The Upper Garden, stretching alongside the fortress wall, is encircled with aromatic herbs and native Mediterranean greenery. It offers stunning views of the neighbouring islands and is an idyllic setting for dinners, picnics, and barbecues.
With its sandy beaches, and exceptional sunsets, the island is known for its natural beauty and quiet pace of life. With a car free policy, visitors can follow the island paths through the lush vegetation either by foot or bicycle. There is direct access by a private path to the sea from the villa for swimming, and kayaks and paddle boards are also available. Boat trips, yoga and spa treatments can also be arranged by the staff at this luxury property to rent, as well as excursions, including a tour of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, and wine tasting at the vineyards of the Pelješac peninsula.
The monastery, fortress and gardens are available for exclusive use during June–September, with 5 bedrooms (10 guests) on a full board basis with private chef and service (minimum stay 3 nights). It is ideal for a wedding venue or other special occasions, including film festivals, concerts, or a corporate retreat.
