This is one of the most fascinating holiday destinations in Europe, with so much to offer of historic interest and six UNESCO World Heritage sites. Its treasures include one of the largest Greek theatres in Italy, in Siracusa, the archaeological area of Agrigento with the remains of Doric temples, the Baroque architecture of Noto and Militello Val di Ctania, the Necropolis of Pantalica and, of course, Mt Etna.
The city of Siracusa is partly on the promontory-island of Ortigia, and partly on the mainland, and linked by a short bridge. Ortigia was the first part of Siracusa to be settled, and is today a jewel of Sicilian Baroque, while on the mainland is the archeological zone.
It is also possible to explore eastern Sicily, between Mt Etna and the sea, and also on the edge of the sea at Giardini Naxos, one of the first Greek colonies in Sicily, with a large archeological area. The location here is convenient for exploring the eastern part of the island, including Mt Etna, the wild gorges of Alcantara and medieval villages such as Savoca, Forza d’Agrò and Castelmola and, of course, the elegant town of Taormina. We also offer a luxury villa to rent just outside the historic village of Trabia, dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries, and just 34 kms east of Palermo.

Sicily has two main international airports – Palermo in the northwest and Catania in the east, both served by direct flights from major European cities. Catania is the more convenient gateway for properties in the baroque southeast and the Etna wine country. The Val di Noto in the southeast – its UNESCO-listed baroque towns of Noto, Ragusa Ibla, and Modica rising from a limestone plateau – is the most architecturally extraordinary corner of the island. The slopes of Etna, with their unique volcanic soils and emerging wine culture, offer a completely different Sicily of lava fields, chestnut forests, and exceptional Nerello Mascalese. Palermo’s chaotic, magnificent street markets of Ballarò and Vucciria are the most vivid expression of the city’s layered Arab-Norman-Spanish culture.
The Valley of the Temples at Agrigento – a ridge of Greek temples above the sea in extraordinary states of preservation – is one of the most spectacular ancient sites in the Mediterranean. The mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina, depicting Roman life in extraordinary detail across vast floors, are among the finest in the world. Palermo’s Palatine Chapel, its interior entirely encrusted in Byzantine gold mosaic, is the most breathtaking room in Sicily.
The Aeolian Islands – Stromboli, Lipari, and Panarea among them – are reachable by hydrofoil from Milazzo and between them offer active volcanoes, thermal waters, and some of the clearest seas in the Mediterranean. The hilltop town of Erice above Trapani, and the nearby Phoenician island of Mozia in its salt lagoon, make for a rewarding full day in the west. Palermo’s street food – arancini, panelle, and sfincione from the Ballarò market – is among the most vibrant in Italy.
