Top attractions in Comporta

Situated in the Alentejo region, an hour’s drive south of Lisbon, the former fishing village of Comporta is now one of Portugal’s most exclusive coastal resorts. It’s celebrated for the simplicity and understated elegance of its architectural design that seamlessly blends into the surrounding natural landscape of rolling sand dunes, rice fields and sugar white beaches studded with cork trees and umbrella pines.

The epitome of boho chic, Comporta’s  ‘Hamptons meets Ibiza’ vibe attracts a cool international crowd of artists, designers, fashionistas and entrepreneurs who flock to its enticing array of casual and sophisticated restaurants, beach clubs, and seaside bars.

The beaches are undeniably stunning and in addition to swimming and surfing, must-visit attractions include the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve where you can go dolphin watching, saddle up for a horseback riding adventure on the dunes, or cycle between rice paddies and through fragrant pine forests.

Its upmarket yet chilled out ambience makes it one of Europe’s most adored — and still relatively ‘secret’ — little gems. Get there before the stampede…

Comporta beaches: the hottest stretches of sand and beach clubs

Exploring from North to South, we’ve curated a guide to the most exquisite beaches and their accompanying beach clubs. It serves as the perfect companion for enhancing your experience during your stay at one of our luxury villas in Comporta.

Praia da Comporta

Close to Comporta village, Praia da Comporta is among the most popular and trendiest beaches around Lisbon. Famed for its crystal clear waters that are perfect for swimming, it’s also a windswept hotspot that’s ideal for kitesurfers. Surrounded by sandy dunes and pine forests, the beach offers a serene and tranquil setting for a day of relaxation.

Comporta Café

For a perfect Comporta beach club with sunbeds and a spot of lunch, Comporta Café is the most sought-after base on Praia da Comporta beach — a timeless gem renowned for its relaxed ambience, delectable cuisine, and bohemian charm.

Ilha da Arroz

At any hour, step into Ilha da Arroz — another chic local Comporta beach club favourite on Praia da Comporta beach that’s been luring discerning beachcombers since 2002. Embracing a more laid-back, no-frills ambiance, it attracts a low-key crowd.

The open-air beachside setting features bare wood tables and vibrant director-style canvas chairs, setting the stage for a relaxed dining experience. Ilha da Arroz doesn’t strive for fine-dining flair; instead, it excels in simplicity. There’s also a lounge terrace, offering a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset.

Praia da Torre

Situated to the west of Torre village, you’ll discover Praia da Torre, a quiet hidden gem of a beach. To reach it, take the exit of Estrada Regional 2611 leading west into the village and continue on foot, as access by car is restricted. Enjoy a picturesque stroll toward the beach, taking in the expansive views of rice paddies flanking both sides of the dirt road.

From there, you’ll reach the dunes that lead to the wild and unspoiled beach, providing the perfect ‘off the beaten track’ escape. If you love horseback riding, local operator Cavalos Na Areia (translated as horses in the sand), offers horse riding treks along the beach and rice paddies for a magical travel experience in Comporta.

Praia dos Brejos

Nestled between Praia da Torre and Praia do Carvalhal, lies Praia dos Brejos, a divine stretch of sand that’s as close to a private beach as one can get. While access to this beach is not easy —Praia dos Brejos is only accessible on foot and by bicycle across the paddy fields that stretch between Comporta and Carvalhal — it’s with it for the castaway experience in a pristine landscape. As there are no amenities like bathrooms, restaurants, or bars, it’s advisable to bring your own provisions for a leisurely and comfortable stay.

Praia do Carvalhal

Located just outside the village of Carvalhal, Praia do Carvalhal is one of the region’s most picturesque beaches, drawing in both locals and tourists alike. Bordered by dunes and fields of rice, providing a habitat for a diverse array of insects, birds, and flowers, the beach is seamlessly integrated into this rich ecosystem, and exudes a timeless charm. Here, you can dive into a vast selection of watersports and activities including surfing, bodyboarding and fishing.
