As well as its landscape and wonderful coastal views, the Overberg is known for its vegetation, including fynbos (small heather-like trees and shrubs which covers the region & #39;s mountains, lowland valleys and coastal plains) and its canola fields with their bright yellow flowers in September. The towns of Hermanus and Gansbaai are particularly popular as well during the whale season between June and December, with Hermanus offering a great place for whale watching along its cliff path, and Gansbaai, famous for sightings of both whales and Great White sharks. Whales also swim near Hermanus town’s Grotto Beach and adjacent Walker Bay Nature Reserve. Another recommended destination to visit is the Agulhas National Park, on Africa’s southernmost tip, with its 19th-century lighthouse with views of the Indian and Atlantic oceans. Northeast, Bontebok National Park is home to interesting bird life, including the blue crane.

Stanford, a small village of Victorian cottages on the Klein River, is one of the most charming and least visited towns in the Western Cape. Swellendam, the third oldest town in South Africa, rewards an unhurried morning through its Cape Dutch streetscape and the beautiful Drostdy Museum.
Southern right whale watching from the Hermanus cliff path between July and November is among the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa – mothers and calves visible from land at remarkably close range. The De Hoop Nature Reserve, a vast fynbos and coastal wilderness of exceptional biodiversity, is one of the finest natural areas in South Africa. Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of the African continent where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, is a genuinely moving landmark worth the drive east.
The Hemel-en-Aarde valley outside Hermanus is home to some of South Africa’s most celebrated Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers and a private tasting itinerary is among the most rewarding half-days in the region.
