Famous for its beautiful green rolling countryside, and charming villages with honey-coloured stone houses, it also offers an enormous choice of interesting places to visit, including historic castles, palaces and stately homes, ancient churches, and stunning gardens. For those who love walking, there are more than 5000 kms of footpaths and bridleways to explore. Days here can be spent exploring the picturesque villages with their art galleries and antique shops, and often still an ancient market square at their centre. The area is also known for its traditional character-filled pubs, and the great choice of restaurants, as well as delicious local cheeses.
Cheltenham, the largest town in the area, known as the ‘Western Gateway to the Cotswolds’, is famous for its impressive Regency architecture. The town was designed in the 18th and 19th centuries as a health resort for wealthy visitors, and visitors are still able to enjoy the Spa Waters at the beautiful Pittville Pump Room. Today, the town is more popular for its restaurants and shopping and, of course, its annual Cheltenham Festival events.

Chipping Campden’s high street of medieval wool merchants’ houses is among the finest in England and best seen in the early morning. The Slad Valley above Stroud, immortalised by Laurie Lee, and the quieter villages of the Windrush valley are the places to find a Cotswolds largely untouched by tourism.
Blenheim Palace outside Woodstock – baroque, vast, and birthplace of Winston Churchill – is one of the great country houses of England and rewards a full afternoon. Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe, with its remarkable royal history and exceptional gardens, is among the most quietly rewarding historic houses in the region.
Oxford is under forty minutes from the southern Cotswolds and rewards a dedicated day – the Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean, and a punting afternoon on the Cherwell are all essential. Stratford-upon-Avon is under an hour from Chipping Campden and worth an afternoon for the Shakespeare houses and a performance at the RSC. The Woolpack at Slad and the Bell at Selsley are the most atmospheric village pubs for honest cooking rooted in local produce.
