Discover Syros
An island that is divided by its natural topography into two parts, the north with its wild landscape, unique traditional villages and hiking trails, and the south with its natural beauty, including more coastal settlements, and organised beaches.
The main town, Hermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades and, without doubt, one of the most fascinating ports in the Mediterranean. Like an open museum, visitors will be impressed by its monumental architecture and magnificent public buildings, such as the City Hall, the Customs Office and the “Apollo” theatre – all testaments to its glorious past.
Well-known throughout Greece for its gastronomic distinctiveness, the cuisine of Syros combines flavours from East and West, Outstanding traditional products of the island include San Michalis spicy cheese, the famous “Halvadopita” – a nougat sandwiched between two crunchy wafers, and the traditional “Loukoumi” with rose and mastic fragrances.

Ermoupoli is one of the most walkable capitals in the Cyclades and much of daily life in the city can be covered on foot. For excursions to the island’s quieter beaches and villages a private driver is the most practical option. We work with a small number of trusted local operators and can arrange dedicated transport for the duration of your stay.
Syros is served by regular ferries from Piraeus in around two hours, making it one of the most accessible islands in the Cyclades. A pre-arranged transfer on arrival is the most seamless experience – let us organise this ahead of your trip.
Ermoupoli, the capital of the Cyclades and once the busiest port in Greece, retains a grandeur entirely its own – its neoclassical architecture, marble-paved Miaouli Square, and elegant Apollo Theatre reward unhurried exploration. Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic hilltop settlement above the city, is a tangle of steep lanes and baroque churches with sweeping views across the harbour. Galissas and Kini on the west coast offer a quieter, more relaxed contrast to the urban energy below.
The Apollo Theatre, modelled on La Scala and one of the finest in the Mediterranean, is Syros’s most surprising landmark – its restored interior is open for tours and occasional performances. Miaouli Square, ringed by grand neoclassical civic buildings, is among the most handsome public spaces in the Greek islands and best appreciated over a long coffee at one of its established cafés.
Syros sits at the geographical heart of the Cyclades, making it an ideal base for island hopping – Mykonos, Paros, and Tinos are all within an hour by fast ferry. Tinos in particular, with its remarkable marble craftsmanship tradition and unspoiled villages, rewards a dedicated day. We can arrange ferry connections and tailored itineraries for any of these.
Ermoupoli’s backstreet tavernas and the covered market behind Miaouli Square are the heart of the local dining scene – loukoumades, local cheeses, and the island’s celebrated loukoumi are all worth seeking out. For a more considered evening, Diogenis on the harbourfront is the island’s most enduring address for confident Greek cooking in one of the most elegant dining rooms in the Cyclades.
