Like the Ionian islands generally, it is a green island with many trees and endless olive groves. The eastern coastline, where the main villages and ports are located, and home to the majority of our luxury villas to rent on Paxos, is gentler than the west, which is characterised by steep cliffs and caves. The west coast is also renowned for its spectacular sunsets, which can be particularly appreciated from the family-run Erimitis Bar and Restaurant, its hill top location on an old vineyard, which has been owned by the family for generations.
The charm of Paxos lies in its serene and tranquil ambience, as well as its beauty. The beaches are white pebble, with the clearest turquoise blue water imaginable. The capital of the island is Gaios a picturesque village towards the south of the island, built around a port which is protected by two small islands Agios Nikolas and Panagia. Towards the north of the island is the village of Lakka, on another beautiful bay, and on the east side, the charming village of Loggos, with its harbour lined with tavernas and bars. You can dine very well on Paxos, which makes the most of its supplies of excellent fresh local seafood, and colourful salads dressed with the distinctive olive oil made from the island’s delicious lianolia olives, washed down with a bottle of white wine from neighbouring Antipaxos.

Paxos is one of the smallest and most intimate of the Ionian islands, and its narrow, olive-shaded lanes are best explored on foot or by scooter for shorter distances. The nearest airports are Corfu and Preveza on the mainland. From Corfu, a ferry to Gaios takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes; from Preveza, a transfer to Parga followed by a short boat crossing is equally straightforward. Gaios, the island’s small capital, clusters around a pretty harbour enclosed by two islets and is best appreciated in the early morning before the day boats arrive from Corfu. Loggos is the most quietly beautiful of the three villages – a handful of houses around a tiny working harbour, a few excellent restaurants, and almost nothing else, which is precisely the point. Lakka, at the northern tip, sits at the head of a sheltered horseshoe bay and has the most relaxed, end-of-the-road atmosphere on the island.
The sea caves and towering white cliffs of the west coast are Paxos at its most dramatic – accessible only by boat, the caves at Ortholithos and Erimitis are among the most spectacular natural formations in the Ionian and best seen on a private morning charter before the excursion boats arrive. Antipaxos, the tiny sister island a short boat ride to the south, possesses two beaches – Voutoumi and Vrika – whose turquoise water and white sand are as fine as anything in Greece.
Antipaxos is the essential half-day excursion – its beaches are genuinely extraordinary and best enjoyed early before the day boats from Corfu descend. Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a remarkable layering of Venetian, French, and British colonial architecture, is worth a dedicated day and easily reached by ferry. The coastal town of Parga on the Greek mainland, with its Venetian castle and pretty harbour, makes for a relaxed afternoon across the water. We can arrange private boat charters and tailored itineraries for any of these.
Loggos is the most rewarding village for dining – its two or three harbour-front restaurants are among the most quietly perfect settings for a long lunch in the Greek islands, with simply prepared fresh fish and local wine the reliable order of the day. Lakka has a similarly unhurried character, with tables at the water’s edge and a pace that discourages anything resembling haste.
Gaios offers the widest choice and is the place for a relaxed evening ouzo and mezedes on the harbourfront. For the most considered cooking on the island, Taka Taka in Loggos has long been the local benchmark – honest, ingredient-led Greek food in one of the most effortlessly charming settings in the Ionians.
