It is about 45 minutes from Santorini, by high speed ferry, or a 4 hour trip from Athens port/Piraeus. It is also on an inter-island ferry route with several other Cycladic islands. Folegandros has become fashionable as an island retreat offering a simple, relaxing and authentic Greek atmosphere, still largely untouched by tourism.
There are just three small villages here, Karavostasi (the port), the Chora and Ano Meria, which are connected by sealed roads, as is Agali Beach. The Chora, closed to car and motorcycle traffic, has three, peaceful tree-shaded squares, the perfect place for a quiet drink or meal. A walk to the church of Panaghia, on the top of a hill, offers a magnificent view over the village and the west coast. The village of Ano Merià has several traditional tavernas, as does the island’s port, Karavostasi, a larger centre also with small hotels, restaurants and shops, and a nearby beach. This and Agali are the only beaches reachable by car. Excursion boats can be taken to other secluded beaches and coves, both sandy and pebble.
Some of these can also be reached by walking or by moped. Although known for its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, there are a number of activities available, including surfing, waterskiing, sailing, paragliding, diving, tennis and horse riding. There are also facilities for car rental, as well as motorbike, bicycle and boat rental. Folegandros is a small, unhurried island where much of the Chora is car-free and best explored on foot. For beach transfers and excursions to the island’s more remote coves, a local taxi or water taxi is the most practical option. We work with a small number of trusted local operators and can arrange transport for the duration of your stay.
Folegandros is served by regular ferries from Piraeus, with journey times of around four to five hours, and by shorter crossings from neighbouring Santorini, Milos, and Sikinos. A pre-arranged transfer covering both legs is the most seamless arrival – let us organise this ahead of your trip.
The Chora is one of the finest village capitals in the Cyclades – its sequence of interconnected squares, medieval kastro, and clifftop church of Panagia perched dramatically above a sheer drop to the sea are best appreciated on foot at dusk. Ano Meria, the island’s second settlement, is a scattered farming community of old windmills and dry stone walls that feels genuinely timeless.
The church of Panagia, reached by a steep stepped path from the Chora and sitting on the island’s highest clifftop, offers the most dramatic views in the Cyclades and is worth the climb at any hour. The medieval kastro within the Chora, its houses forming a protective outer wall in the original Venetian manner, is among the best preserved in the islands.
Sikinos, the neighbouring island to the east, is a short ferry ride and one of the quietest and least visited in the Cyclades – its own Chora and ancient temple rewarding those who make the crossing. Milos, with its extraordinary volcanic coastline and celebrated sea caves at Kleftiko, is within reach by ferry and makes for a rewarding full day. We can arrange private boat charters to explore Folegandros’s more secluded southern coves.
The Chora’s interconnected squares are the heart of the dining scene – tables spilling under mulberry trees on warm evenings make for one of the most effortlessly beautiful settings for dinner in the Greek islands.
