Novigrad, home to one of our villas to rent in Istria, is located on a peninsula on the Western coast of Istria, two kilometres north from the mouth of the river Mirna and about 20 kilometres south from the borders with Slovenia and Italy. With a rich cultural heritage, the town has retained its medieval structure, with its narrow winding streets and the famous city wall, with its battlements and two round towers, which has protected the town for centuries.
Novigrad is also known as one of the top Istrian gourmet destinations, with culinary events held throughout the summer months. The Novigrad region is also highly regarded as the number one tennis destination in Croatia, with the popular tennis tournament, ATP Croatia Open Umag held here every year in July. Cycling and mountain biking are very popular too, with more than 500 kms of bicycle trails enabling visitors to discover forests and streams, vineyards, hidden chapels and ancient ruins. A unique attraction for children, only 5 kms away, is the “Istralandia” aquapark.

Grožnjan, a hilltop artists’ village near the Slovenian border, is among the most quietly charming stops in the region.
The Roman amphitheatre at Pula – among the largest and best preserved in the world – is one of the most extraordinary ancient monuments on the Adriatic. The Byzantine mosaics in the Euphrasian Basilica at Poreč, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are among the finest in Europe outside Ravenna.
Venice is under three hours by high-speed catamaran from Rovinj and rewards an overnight stay. The Slovenian town of Postojna, with its extraordinary cave system, is under two hours from the northern peninsula. Trieste, with its grand Habsburg architecture and exceptional coffee culture, makes for a rewarding half-day. We can arrange private drivers and tailored itineraries for any of these.
Rovinj’s backstreet konobas are the most rewarding for honest coastal cooking, while the hilltop restaurants around Motovun are the place for truffle-led menus in season.
