This totally unique luxury apartment to rent in Rome is situated at the centre of the Piazza Navona, and attached to the façade of the 17th-century church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. Originally designed as one of the private apartments for Pope Innocent X, who served from 1644 – 1655, the owners have retained the original historic charm and features, including the huge dimensions (350m2) including 26 feet high ceilings with wonderful frescoes by Allegrini, the Baroque-style walls and the marble decoration surrounding the doors.

The apartment is accessed via a spiral staircase into an entrance hall, with a library on one side and the music room on the other. From the library there is access to the living/entertainment room, a dining area, and an open-plan kitchen. There are two en-suite bedrooms. The master bedroom, the Pope’s Room, opens to a small columned balcony with views over the Piazza Navona. The spectacular master bathroom here features a round Jacuzzi-shower alcove lined with over 300,000 small tiles. The music room on the other side of the entrance leads to a studio, then to the Via dell’Anima second bedroom, with its luxurious bathroom.

Entrance hall

Music Room, leading towards the Via Santa Maria d’Anima part of the apartment. Muted blue/grey walls and ceiling fresco offset the grand piano here. Large windows allow for much natural light.

Studio, with a custom design desk at the window, a green velour sofa and walls with antique Roman books.

Via dell’Anima Bedroom. Enveloped in a deep velvet and woven fabric wallpaper the room exudes cosy intimacy. At the centre of the room is a large artwork of 3 metres, portraying a chain of delicate porcelain flowers, which complement the frescoed ceiling.  An antique marble fireplace found by the client adds to the prestige and warmth of the room.

Dressing Room. This room features a hidden door within the closet to maintain the symmetry of the room, and disguise the entrance to the bathroom. The large custom design closets were upholstered with fine Italian suit fabric and a refined detail at the edge of Italian leather stitching.

Bathroom. On passing through the hidden door into the bathroom, you enter a room of travertine, dark contrasts, and brass details. An inner room was constructed to house the WC and the shower, its facade presenting a symmetrical wall with gold leafed glass doors. At the center of the wall, a lit niche accommodates an antique marble sculpture.

Library. On the other side of the entrance there is a Corridor and Library, again with magnificent frescoed ceilings. As well as the library, there is a fireplace and a long velvet bench.

Lounge – Bar. Positioned between the kitchen and the master bedroom there is a lounge with TV, and a built-in bar.

Kitchen – Dining Room. The kitchen has a full wall of custom shelving backed by a brilliant gold. There is also a peninsula made from precious Amazon marble and a table with an ornate pattern of antique marble. The kitchen also features an ancient Murano glass chandelier by Seguso.

Master Bedroom (Pope Room): The masterpiece of the apartment was the room created for Pope Innocent X himself. With ceilings 8 meters tall topped by the most spectacularly detailed fresco, Allegrini depicts the story of Dido. The high platform for the bed is intended to bring those who sleep there closer to the fresco above. The headboard behind is covered in a traditional Florentine pattern hand made on an antique loom.

Master Bathroom. Clad with travertine, detailed with brass, and lit with custom glass fixtures, the master bathroom has used the a small circular coppola here to create a jacuzzi. Surrounded by a fine micro mosaic and with a gold base it recalls the spirit of traditional roman bath.
