One of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, the vineyards in Tuscany border Liguria to the northwest, Emilia-Romagna to the north, Marche to the northeast, Umbria to the east and Lazio to the southeast. Generally, because of the geological and climatic conditions, the wineries of this region produce high-quality and popular Tuscan wines, including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, or Vino Nobile from Montepulciano. Among the best-known wines here are the Chianti Classico, which can vary from light-bodied to full-bodied according to the area it is produced, given that the particular region’s climate and soils affect the taste of wine produced.
Tuscany is a wonderful destination for a holiday at any time of year, and out of the high summer season, it’s also particularly ideal to visit Florence, with its art galleries and museums, and fewer crowds. Once the olive harvest is over in November, the Tuscan countryside is also quieter and the weather cooler, so you might like to visit one of several thermal baths. The natural spa with waterfalls and hot springs of Terme di Saturnia and the Fonte Pura Thermal Baths are located in the Maremma area of Tuscany. Also, just outside the small town of Bagni San Filippo in the Val d’Orcia, there are natural hot spring waterfalls, and also small pools of hot water surrounded by woods – perfect for a daytime dip.
