The Lake District was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, and considered one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Ullswater, home to our rental properties here, is the second largest lake in the Lake District, and offers a range of activities, including mountain walks, lakeside walks, cycling and lake cruises.
The Ullswater Way is a 20 mile walking route around the lake, which can also incorporate an open bus or a steamer, or a mountain guide can also arrange a bespoke walk based on guests’ interests – for example a historic walk, or one which includes wildlife, foraging and also photography. Lake cruises are also operated during the summer months.
Boat hire is available on the lake shores as well as sailing and windsurfing courses. The Glenridding Sailing is located on the Spit at Glenridding, just and hires out kayaks, Canadian Canoes, sailing dinghies and traditional boats as well as offering tuition.
Arguably the best lakeshore walk is found on the south eastern shore (where our two properties are located), between Howtown (6 minutes walk from Waternook and The Great Barn) and Glenridding (2 hours walk) – also two of the three stopping points for the boat cruises.
The largest lake in the Lake District, Lake Windermere, an hour’s drive away from Lake Ullswater, also offers boat hire, well as sailing and windsurfing courses. The Glenridding Sailing Centre here hires out kayaks, Canadian Canoes, sailing dinghies and traditional boats as well sailing lessons.
Last, but not least, the Lake District offers some of the UK’s best restaurants, seven of them with Michelin stars.
