Menorca is a quieter island than its neighbours, Mallorca and Ibiza, offering beautiful natural scenery, active outdoor activities, white sand beaches, a rich cultural heritage, and historical sites to explore. The beautiful old town of Ciutadella, the island’s original capital, is known for its cobbled streets, pretty Mediterranean-style buildings, a lovely harbour with boats, and harbourside cafés and restaurants and a fascinating history. After the Turks invaded the island in 1558 much of the old town was destroyed, but was then rebuilt in the 17th century. In the 18th century, Mahon became the capital of Menorca and, although not as charming as Ciiutadella, it offers some very good restaurants and shops, including some excellent designer shopping.

The island is renowned for its coast and beaches, as well as its beautiful interior. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, the island deservedly has a reputation as a natural paradise, especially in the spring months its fields of wild flowers. Many of the island’s best beaches are found off the beaten path, via walking routes, such as the Cami de Cavall that takes walkers from bay to bay, or for those who prefer to go riding, the Camino de Caballos horse-riding trail circles the island. There is also a good choice of water sports on offer on the island, including kayaking, and snorkelling in Menorca’s deep-sea caves. Menorca’s diving spots are considered among the best in the Mediterranean.

Visitors can also enjoy tours to local family-run Bodegas to learn more about Menorca’s winemaking traditions, which date back to the 13th century. Many vineyards offer dining as well as wine tasting. Menorcan gin. Xoriguer, is also popular, and has been produced on the island for more than 200 years.
