The 85 metre high cliff above the caldera is the wall of the submerged volcano crater caused by the cataclysmic eruption of this volcano around 3000 BC, which also caused the demise of the Minoan civilisation. Steeped in history, Santorini has plenty of archaeological sites to visit including the ruins of ancient Fira and Akrotiri.

The cliff-top, home to many of the island's villages, offers spectacular sea views as far as the eye can see. The best locations for views and sunsets include the stunning white village of Oia, on the northern tip of the island. Imerovigli, another picturesque white-washed village between Oia and Fira is also a wonderful location for views, as are Firostefani and Fira. As well as being the largest town on the island, Fira offers a lively atmosphere and a great choice of restaurants and bars.

Despite its small size, Santorini is undoubtedly one of the major tourist destinations in Greece and, with flights available either directly from many European airports or via Athens (50 minute flight). Alternatively, the awe-inspiring view as you pull into the cliff-ringed bay makes it worth opting for a boat or flying dolphin to make your entrance!
