Built on the banks of the Garonne River, Bordeaux has been honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage city for its Port de la Lune area, the historic part of the city which runs from the Quai de Bacalan to the Quai de Paludate, beside the Garonne, and one of Europe's biggest 18th century architectural urban areas. Visitors are enchanted by the quaint, narrow streets and unique architecture that the old quarter has to offer. Must-see attractions include the Grand Théâtre, the Place de la Bourse and the stunning Eglise Notre Dame. Bordeaux also boasts nine public museums, notably the Museum of Fine Art, the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of Modern Art and the Aquitaine Museum.
As well as its rich history, architecture and river, Bordeaux is, of course, renowned for its famous vineyards, and is the world's major wine industry capital. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century, and it is also home to the world's main wine fair, Vinexpo. To accompany the celebrated wines, there is no shortage of excellent restaurants offering gastronomic delights. With its Atlantic ocean coastline, fish and shellfish abound, as do meat dishes, including the famous Entrecôte à la Bordelaise, a great match with a full-bodied Bordeaux red!
